Therapy for Overthinking

Overcome analysis paralysis and turn your noisy brain into the powerful tool it can be

Do any of these sound familiar?

  • You worry about what others think. You try to be thoughtful and considerate—but often, that means putting yourself last. It leaves you feeling anxious, resentful, and unsure about how to break the pattern.

  • Overthinking causes you to miss opportunities. The time you spend in your head trying to avoid mistakes and make the right choices means that opportunities are often gone before you're ready to take action.

  • You can’t stop thinking about what you said—or didn’t say—and you keep replaying it in your head. It makes all your relationships stressful, and the anxiety that comes with the endless rumination is exhausting.

  • People see you as a high performer, but you don't feel like one. It feels like everything takes too much time and energy because you always get caught in thought loops.

If that’s you, know this: you’re not defective. Your brain isn’t broken. Change is possible.

How therapy helps with overthinking

Clients often come to me struggling with:

  • Overanalyzing every decision

  • Feeling stuck in their head

  • Constant second-guessing

  • Racing thoughts and anxiety

In our work together, I help them develop strategies & learn tools to help them both better understand their brain and to get it under control.

How does that help? Well, here's some of the changes clients experience as a result of our work together:

  • Better ability to quiet your brain, feel calmer, and be more focused.

  • Replacing anxiety and rumination with calm, confidence, and clarity

  • Less thinking, more doing, which means a happier, more successful, more fulfilling life.

The When, Where, and How

  • I see clients virtually (via phone or video) throughout California. (In-person 'walk & talk' sessions are also available if you're in the Sacramento area.)

  • Generally, we’ll have weekly or bi-weekly calls, but there are also options for asynchronous support via secure messaging if that fits what you need.

  • While I'm not contracted with any insurance panels, I can provide a superbill for out of network reimbursement.

  • HSA funds can also generally be used.

FAQ

  • If you find yourself overthinking, ruminating, lost in analysis paralysis, and don’t know how to quiet it down, you're in the right place. I can help you learn how to stop the thought loops and turn those anxious thoughts in your brain into calm, clear, focused action.

  • At the risk of sounding vague, the reality is that it can vary quite a bit, depending on a number of factors (frequency of sessions, asynchronous support, out-of-network coverage). Pricing is always something we discuss in a consultation call so you have a clear idea of what to expect before you commit.

  • It depends (I hate the vagueness of that answer, but it's the honest one.) For some clients, it's just a few months while they tackle a specific challenge. For others it's longer-term, because they value the ongoing support of having a trusted advisor help them navigate through life.

  • Under California law, everything in our sessions (including the fact that we're having them) is confidential unless there are safety concerns or you give me permission to share information about our sessions with someone else.

  • The research done on this topic indicates they’re just as effective. For phone sessions, some people actually find it more comfortable to open up and dig into challenging topics than they would in a face-to-face situation.

"I can’t think of one time in the last two years that I didn’t walk away from a session with Steve without some gem of an insight. Old limiting patterns that have plagued me my entire life have finally begun to dissolve. At first, I wondered if the cost would be worth it. Looking back, I find it hard to overstate the value of those sessions."

Meet Steve

As someone who grew up with a single parent in an ever-changing, unstable environment, I resorted to turning inward from a young age as a way to try and figure out how to navigate the world. It worked to some degree, but came with the price tag of anxiety, including a lot of overthinking. So, I suppose it's only natural that I was drawn to help others who struggle with it.

Steve McCready, a licensed psychotherapist & coach in Sacramento, California

Since 2002, in my work as a counselor, psychotherapist (CA licensed MFT #43212), and coach, I’ve had the privilege of helping hundreds of people learn how to quiet their noisy brains and turn them into the powerful tools they can be. The work my clients do both inspires me and challenges me to continue my own growth journey.

Outside of work, you can probably find me reading, playing games with my family, helping the dogs at our local animal shelters, making music, or floating on my paddleboard on a nearby lake.
